I’ve been Grokking around

A recent discovery of a not so recent technology has given me a brand new gadget to play with and work with. Grokking is an activity that provides me a visual tool to search through a literature database. Grokker is a visual search tool that provides you a network of knowledge objects around a set of criteria.
For my work in doctoral studies, this tool allows me to collaborate with technology and not people. I put in a topic, like “informal learning” and it provides me a network of topics in informal learning. I can drill down into the small topic area and find specific literature about a topic. This helps me to add literature to my lit review in a much more intuitive fashion.
Grokking is my new fun activity for classwork and research. So much so, I’ve got my wife grokking in her research work in Student-Athlete Academics. Of course, she needs to use my database access at University of Phoenix because her State school hasn’t come up to speed.
I must confess, this tool is not new to University of Phoenix or to the world. My recent discovery only shows us how collaboration with professionals can provide additional tools and resources that help us work more effectively. Some of these tools might be an undiscovered frontier in ability. So, thanks to my able and collaborating instructor at University of Phoenix for helping me grow.

[...] A recent discussion in class led me to map out some helpful tips in conducting a literature review. One of the tips was about something I’ve blogged about before: Grokking. One reason, I like to use the Grokker function is the visual nature of the search. It provides a network of articles in categories and I can drill down, shift left or just randomly select the articles I want to read. This is a helpful and it leads to another tip for the literature review, or anything that requires organization really: Mind Mapping. [...]
