Presenter

Believe it or not, I am a professional speaker and presenter. I get paid money to present and deliver speeches, thus the professional status. It is a skill I love having and don’t publicize nearly enough. It is fun to get in front of an audience and perform.
Up to this point I marveled at the basic technology of a remote mouse or presenter to control slides and functions on the computer. Now, there was nothing stopping me from having one outside of the cost and the lack of serious need for one. It was a cost-benefit decision that finally changed.
As I prepare for residency, I am developing a PowerPoint presentation for my dissertation prospectus. I loathe PowerPoint, mostly because people abuse it and rely on it without concern for a more appropriate or effective medium. I digress. The presentation is going to be delivered on Friday morning, this week. The complexities of the information make the PowerPoint presentation more awkward than is necessary.
In an attempt to alleviate the awkwardness, I decided not to bounce back and forth to the computer to advance slides. Likewise, I do not want to say, “next” or “slide” to someone else (I loathe this more than PowerPoint). Additionally, I want to present the material in a manner that is conducive to my style and the needs of the audience…which means, in part, being able to move around and speak to different areas of the room.
So, I was looking around or remote presenter for my laptop that was within reason, compatible, and had some nice range (over 30 feet). Kensington had a nice one for about $60USD and so I dropped in on the store to pick one up. Right next to my choice was the Microsoft Presenter 3000 (fancy name huh?). It had a shorter range than Kensington but offered the same laser pointer option and has a timer with vibration alert in the remote. All this for the same cost plus rebate…SOLD!
I brought it home, struggled with the packaging and put it to work. It works great, the laser is bright, the controls are easy, the vibration alert is cool. I am a happy customer. Now, to practice for the rest of the week.

Being the total gadget geek that I am, I want one! I do, even if I would get limit use out of one…sorta. I would probably use it at home more than anything, as I wirelessly control my laptop while connected to my 37″ LCD TV. Would be nice to show pictures and control music, but beyond that, it’s only the gadget geek in me that wants one.

Joel,
The presenter is great for controlling PPT or some other presentation. I’ve used the mouse tool a few times and find it to be okay, when you get used to it. By far the coolest gadget for us EduGeek types is the actual PC remote. M friend John just bought a new laptop complete with PCMCIA sized remote and it rocks. I am jealous, almost enough to update my own tech. Still, I’ve got an iPod and he doesn’t.
