Continual Attention to the Dissertation

M. Glynn commented on a post regarding a place in the UOP infrastructure for continual work on the dissertation. Glynn, a fellow UOP Doc student just completed Year 2 residency and see the importance of being able to work on the dissertation within the doctoral community continually.

I received a comment from a potential mentor about communication between dissertation specific courses (UOP has 3 or 4 dissertation specific courses where students work 1:1 or 1:few with the mentor or committee). The comment is that the mentor will not provide content advice between courses but would help with direction-oriented needs. This is a perfectly legitimate perspective and well respected.

The dissertation is designed to be an original work of one author; however, the author is a member of a doctoral community. The community provides support, opinion, discourse, thought provocation, etc. So having a forum where the dissertation can be a continual working document would fit (provided the author was the sole author and not taking work from others.)

Glynn’s comment brought out some interesting logistical perspectives on a Doctoral Student Lounge at University of Phoenix. Glynn recommended having an easy to use system. Something easy to access, reliable, and secure. I agree. I would also recommend having the forums limited to the existing cohort of students. This would provide students with some consistency and a more psychologically safe environment to learn.

I want to thank Glynn for the comment, it is always nice to read comments. You can see this allows us to delve into more discourse. Your comments are always welcome.
