How About a Contest?
Michael Wales ~ Airman, Programmer, Father ~ over at MichaelWales.com has a great post on blog contests. I’d never considered a blog contest to increase traffic, but the concept makes perfect sense. People love free things. So why not?
But what kind of contest to run?
NPR’s “Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me” offers a celebrity voice on a home answering machine. I could do that, I have a good voice.
There are prize giveaways. I don’t have a tremendous budget for such things, but something small might be in order.
I could give a free copy of my dissertation when completed in 2009. That is a long time to wait.
Or a free blog plug on my podcast, which is sorely absent but in revival.
I could award someone the glory of winning. Cheap, Simple, Effective.
Better yet! I can ask you. What would you like to win?

How would one win a prize in the first place? Which comes first, the selection of the prize or the design of the contest to win said prize…the chicken, or the egg.

The chicken….
Good point. Perhaps the contest should help drive traffic to the Doc Blog. Maybe something about the winner should be someone who drives the most people to the blog measured through a comment count.
Or, the person who links to the blog most on there own blog in a month.
A great point Joel, what do you think the contest could be?

Perhaps you can have a contest to see how many people your readers can get to comment on your blog, including the name of the person who referred them.
