mmm, Beer (and Rotary)

I don’t write too much about my involvement with Rotary. As a member of this international organization, I get the chance to build a better community (similar to building a better blog but with more people…haha). My club, Buffalo Sunrise Rotary meets each week on Tuesday morning for breakfast, socializing, learning, and creating action in the community. Each quarter the Sunrisers have an evening meeting out in the community somewhere. This quarter we went to Flying Bison Brewery. They have their own blog, too.
Now, I am a homebrewer of beer; good beer (heck, great beer). In that, I am familiar with Flying Bison’s craft brewing here in Buffalo, NY. Tim Herzog, the proprietor of the brewery and I had met a handful of times before this meetup. I even was a steward (waiter) for a contest where Tim was the judge. It is a fascinating process, giving life to beer, and no one in Buffalo does it better on Tim’s scale.
So, last night we combined the learning and socializing of Rotary with the something unique and important in Buffalo’s history, beer-making.
Not only that, another Rotarian in the group is a homebrewer and President of a group called Sultans of Swig. Homebrewers are a social bunch and John is no exception. Sharing beer around these groups is welcomed and expected, especially if it is good (but it doesn’t have to be). This sharing also means inviting comments and thoughts on the beer. What I learned in brewing beer came from these sharing meetups. John brewed a Belgian Dubbel and Trippel. These are 2 of my favorite beers to drink and enjoy and I did, as soon as I got home. Fantastic!
While blogging and interacting through Internet-channels is fun and exciting; there is something about the physical nature of meetups. In your travels this month consider stopping in at a Rotary meeting or a brewery and take part in some of the best socializing you can find.
Comments welcome.

I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t get out and socialize as much as I should, though the times I do usually involve beer. Having left church activities behind, something of a void has appeared in my life, and I’ve not been able to find something to fill that void. I’ll look into a rotary club…sounds worthwhile. Thanks!
