Guitar Hero…You’re My Hero

Posted by mike on June 3, 2008 in General Musings |

I’ve been feeling stressed out recently and this stress jams up my productivity making me feel lethargic at work, school, and home. I wasn’t sure why though. It seemed that I’ve been missing an important part of life…play. Not play like going out and hanging with friends. I mean genuine, frivolous play.

So my wife and I bought Guitar Hero III for the Playstation 2.

The first night was a little rough. We were getting used to the controller guitar, the finger movements, and the game. It was an seemingly endless onslaught of Slow Ride by Foghat. Onslaught of us playing it endlessly and onslaught because we were playing it badly.

My friend, Foley, likened it to driving through a series of deep tunnels and losing reception. He eventually left.

Things got better for my wife and I. We got through Slow Ride and onto some other songs. Eventually we felt comfortable enough beginning a career in the game and even earned some money (points). We got good so quickly that we opted for a second guitar controller so we could play together in the game’s co-op career mode. Can you imagine two grown adults hastily putting their daughter to bed so they can rock out in the living room? We’ll come over one night and you can see it for yourself. We must look like goons to passers-by but we don’t care. We’ve been having so much fun that I feel more connected to my wife, refreshed, and a little tired after being a rockstar all night (which makes sleeping more comfortable).

Not to mention the little bit of exercise we all need. Oh yes! It is not just fingering keys, you need to move to the music you are creating (or butchering as the case may be). So a little sweaty, a little tired, a little more connected to each other, my wife and I retire to our bedroom each night knowing that we rocked the house.

Guitar Hero…you’re my hero.

It was a slow and repetitive torture on my ears. Your first live album could have incorporated the torture into it. Call it “Mike and Maggie Live at Guantanamo Bay”. You would give up your mother to make it stop.

    I left out self preservation.

    Don’t take it personally.
